How to write a Resume Objective

Objectives have become a standard part of resumes. They’re meant as a one-line opportunity to demonstrate to a hiring manager that you have a little more depth than a simple list of skills and work history. But, because resume objectives are so short, many job applicants struggle with them to the point that many hiring managers ignore objectives entirely. However, with a little work, you can craft a smart objective that might lift your resume to the top of the stack.

A reoccurring complaint among managers responsible for reviewing hundreds of resumes in a go is that many objectives are little more than strings of buzzwords. Rather than proving that you can talk management-speak, buzzwords can be an annoyance. As you write your objective in resume, attempt to avoid them and instead focus on two key points: what you already can do and what you want to do in the future.

Writing an objective is essentially goal setting, hopefully phrased in such a way that it implies that your goal is worthwhile to your potential employer. You also want to point out that your goal is obtainable, that you already have the necessary skills. Many resume writers use a simple formula and plug in your specific skills and goals: “To use [my skills] to [reach a goal].” This formula is over-used but demonstrates clearly what you want your objective to convey. Use this formula as a starting point when writing your resume objective.

Once you have a basic objective written, try rephrasing it. You’ll want to keep your resume objective to one sentence — one sentence fragment, actually, as you need to avoid the word ‘I,’ and therefore a subject for your sentence — but, beyond those limitations, you can experiment. Instead of your skills you might focus on a brief explanation of why you are changing careers, or on a talent that you wish to develop. You might even consider using different objectives as you apply to various positions: you can customize your description of your goals to focus on the benefits of a specific potential employer.

Developing a good objective can take some time and thought. However, a well-crafted objective will set you apart from other candidates who rely on formulaic, boring objectives meant only to fill a space tradition has left on their resumes.
